One of my closest friends, Carmen, is a disabled WoC artist in a small town in Michigan.
She has insulin-controlled diabetes and a degenerative spinal condition that causes intense pain and potentially will leave her wheelchair bound.
This time last year, she was caring for her mother, who was dying of congestive heart failure. She passed away shortly before Christmas.
Because of her mom’s death, she was basically responsible for her apartment and some of her mother’s debts. The landlord allowed her a payment plan, but has now become impatient for the rest of his money and is serving her notice to pay or quit.
She has applied for Medicare, food stamps, and other assistance, and has qualified for the Low Income Subsidy through Social Security, but none of this help has hit yet. It should be hitting in January. It’s entirely possible we will be able to keep Carmen in her home entirely.
Because of the applications to Medicare and SSI, direct deposit into her account will not work - it will cause further problems even if we’re able to stave off the current problem. I will personally be writing a check to her landlord, and any funds left over will be given to Carmen in the form of an Amazon gift card or a Kroger food card.
My PayPal address is petticoatruler(at)gmail(dot)com.
If you wish to buy something instead, I have a jewelry business at Casus Bellissima. For the next 10 days, I will give all proceeds from jewelry sales to Carmen. She gets help, you get a gift.
I know this is one of the tightest, most difficult times of year for everyone. I know that times are hard. I’m just asking for help for my friend, who has always been an amazing person, supportive when I needed it, and good to her bones.
If you can’t send anything, that’s ok! Please signal boost this and pass it along. I really appreciate anything anyone can do.
